Gain the Upper Hand over Procrastination #73 4124

“the action of delaying or postponing something”, and to be honest we all experience this action, we choose when to do something and when not to do something.

Although we did not spell out how we can STOP PROCRASTINATING here are a few tips:

  1. Goal Setting – when you set a goal to finish a task you are more likely to complete it without procrastinating.
  2. Breaking Down Tasks – take small bites so you don’t feel overwhelmed.
  3. Consistent Sleep Schedule – sleep is essential for functional thinking and too often we put off tasks due to lack of concentration and the sense of exhaustion.
  4. Meditation – are you putting something off because you are waiting for someone else to do it  – if so, mediation through conversation will be a benefit.
  5. Physical Exercise – just as essential is sleep so is exercise to increase our endorphins and energy level.
  6. Time Boxing – set aside time on your calendar or to do list for each task needed to complete – using small steps to visualize accomplishments.
  7. Visualization – see the task that is causing you to feel anxious or overwhelmed as complete with positive energy.

Play it Scared #72 31824
https://youtu.be/62FjhroOwuY

Fear is an unavoidable experience in life. This episode explores how and where fear can keep us living in “small” comfort zones, as well as how playing it scared can help us push the margins of those limiting comfort zones towards greater personal fulfillment.

AI Generated: “Fear is a response to a perceived threat or danger, and it can cause psychological changes that lead to behavioral reactions like fleeing or becoming aggressive. Fear can be triggered by something unexpected, like a loud noise, even if it’s not dangerous. This is because the fear reaction is activated almost immediately, a few seconds faster than the brain can process what’s happening.”

Bringing Intentionality to Play_ #71 3424
https://youtu.be/sEjdfGoLESQ

“Playing is just as important for adults as it is for children. Among its many benefits, adult play can boost your creativity, sharpen your sense of humor, and help you cope better with stress.”  (https://psychcentral.com/blog/the-importance-of-play-for-adults)

When we introduce play into our daily routine, it has been noted that it improved our overall productivity.  We may have a daily task of exercise but if we add something to that task like listening to music, an audio book, or a ‘playful’ active thought the task is completed with a lighter feel of accomplishment.

Candace shares how she reads (audio) a fictional book while exercising – a pleasurable experience with a needed task.  Karen shares her stationary bike riding is accompanied by watching TV and allowing this time separated from work or other obligations.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/IntentionalityGurus https://theintentionalitygurus.com/
This episode explores how failing and how we respond to it in our careers and personal life is the key to success. We’ll touch on Carol Dweck’s research as well as the work of John Maxwell and others to identify key skills we can develop to be good at failing. John Maxwell states, “It is part of the road to success. Failure is life’s greatest teacher. It builds your character and humbles you. Failure is suspended success until the right moment, but in the meantime, you must work hard, think hard and be consistent.” https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Right-Kind-of-Wrong/Amy-C-Edmondson/9781982195069 https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/failure-found-to-be-an-essential-prerequisite-for-success/ Carol Dweck coined the terms fixed mindset and growth mindset to describe the underlying beliefs people have about learning and intelligence. When students believe they can get smarter, they understand that effort makes them stronger. Therefore they put in extra time and effort, and that leads to higher achievement.

We will share ways to move toward revealing our essence’s light to lead more expressed, satisfying, and fulfilled lives. In this podcast Karen shares her anxiety / fear of driving and how this plays into her positive and negative thoughts. If Karen can use her positive energy to normalize her emotions she may find a way to lessen the thoughts that may cause her distress. It is not as simple as saying, “don’t think that or feel that”….

This morning on The Intentionality Gurus where I have positioned myself as Candace Pollock’s guinea pig, I shared a fear and my anxiety for freeway driving.  Add freeway driving to an event /task that also causes me anxiety it’s like a double whammy!  Today’s theme was, “show your light”.  The concept is to put your positive thoughts forward to help us navigate through those negative and anxious things that may bring us down both emotionally and physically.  (As Candace asked, what if I allowed the positive to come out and bar the negative, and how could I do that?)
I suggested during the podcast I was going to experiment with this after the show as I had to go out, drive on the freeway and attend to something that causes me anxiety but in my realistic mind, should not.  (There is that pesky word, SHOULD!)
As I pulled out of my garage, I noticed the rain and the gloomy feeling that was absorbing in my body.  Thoughts of curling up on my couch and taking in the summer rainy day.  However, within second my brain switched into preparation mode.  I checked my windshield wipers, turned on my headlights and proceeded to move forward.  I had my destination in sight, and I was not focusing on the directions, however my focus was on the rain and accepting it was just part of the journey.  When I arrived at my destination, I felt calm and the anxiety I often feel when I walk into this building was not noticeable, no pit in my stomach, no questions in my head.  (I did not think of this until a little while later.)
From location one to two again I developed slight anxiety as I traveled a route, I thought I knew but it was not recognizable until I reached my next stop.  I felt sweaty and I was questioning myself as to why I went the wrong way and then there I was…
On my drive home from location # 2 I realized a few things.
When I got into the car, I didn’t check my gas gauge (something that is routine for me).
I remembered that I was not feeling the usual side effects of my anxiety, sweating, and feeling out of control driving my car.
I completed two assignments with no complications and as expected.
Driving in the heavy rain kept me focused and calm at the same time – how did this happen?
Positive Intelligence has taught me something that I now see has become part of my fabric and that is when I remove my focus from the negative and anticipated anxiety, those experiences are in the past and “showing my light” provides me with calm.
Now to remember this the next time…

24 July 2023 The intentionality Gurus with Candace Pollock_ Could You Be Shallow?_ 72423
Building on our recent Compound 1 Thing podcast, this episode will explore how Cal Newport’s distinction between “Deep Work” and “Shallow Work” can impact reaching goals.

“To achieve deep work means to spend uninterrupted time with complete focus on the task at hand.”
“Shallow work is similar to administrative tasks and duties that can be done while distracted, that aren’t usually creating new value, and are easily duplicated.”

Deep work is like a superpower in our increasingly competitive twenty-first-century economy.

20 March 2023 “The Intentionality Gurus with Candace Pollock WHAT DO YOU WANT vs. WHAT YOU ASK FOR? ”
https://youtu.be/pIlQiER7ywI

This episode digs into the foundation upon which we build our goals and lives to get to what we say we want, to discover factors that can keep us from getting there. It starts with our slippery relationship with the words “want” and “ask” when it comes to setting goals and the projects and tasks necessary to reach them, whether for and through others or for ourselves. Not being clear in our own minds means we can cloak necessary tasks (leading to our bigger “wants”) as “asks”, fooling others and ourselves about which are negotiable and which are not. This in turn can lead to habitual disappointment, distrust, and conceding ground as to whether, when, and how much our “wants” are met.

13 March 2023  “Are You Over-Committed?”

The Intentionality Gurus with Candace Pollock _ Being Intentional with Shallow Work 2_6_23

https://youtu.be/m6Uw1LpPG2U
Much of our daily existence can be consumed by the distractions of “shallow work”, tasks that don’t require deep focus and attention, leaving us feeling like we didn’t get much done for the day. While some of it may be “necessary”, most of it doesn’t add new value to our lives or move us toward our goals. Today’s podcast explores what “shallow work” is, why it is important to keep it in check, and how to do so.

Laura Vanderkam helps people spend more time on what matters, and less on what doesn’t.

We can have aspirations for a better new year–creating goals/resolutions, schedules, and habits to achieve them. However, if life will do what life does: throw us curve balls which can disrupt our best laid plans. Today’s podcast explores the work of several mindset and goal gurus toward gaining new perspectives on how to handle inevitable life disruptions to increase the odds we will reach our goals.

Not knowing what today’s topic was going to be – Karen wrote this blog:
Word of the Day is NO!  I am typically a YES person, keeping everyone happy and helping others accomplish their tasks reaching their goals and feeling used even though I was sincere in helping, I often find myself asking the same question over and over again, WHY? Why do I give up my time, energy, resources for others when I need to provide myself the same luxury I provide to others. We all need to know when to say “NO”, and stop playing the nice ‘guy’ when it is not in our best interests physically, physiologically, and mentally. For most of life I thought being the nice ‘guy’ or ‘gal’ meant saying Yes and pleasing everyone, even when it felt wrong and painful. However, I continued to make the attempt to please others because that is what I brought to believe I had to do. Today’s parents are teaching their children to be more mindful and to politely use the word ‘NO’ when the word ‘YES’ is wrong. The futures of tomorrow are learning to be mindful of their needs as much as those of the people around them. Using the word ‘NO’ can have a positive affect on you. Instead of committing to others you are making choices that benefit you and not in a selfish manner. When saying ‘YES’ it is important that you are vested in what you offer to do. You are not a ‘bad’ person for saying ‘NO’. I have learned that oftentimes what we don’t do determines what we can do, often quoted by Tim Ferriss (author). “We need to learn the slow ‘yes’ and the quick ‘no’.” (Author unknown) Thanks to my training in “Personal Intelligence”, I am learning the slow ‘yes’ and the quick ‘no’.

An epidemic of busyness can threaten to keep us on a “hamster wheel” of “doing”. We over-commit, under-estimate how we are going to “get it all done”, and our time and attention are often hijacked by the competing demands of our work, family, and personal habits. Together, these can undermine our sense of success and personal fulfillment.Today’s episode explores this epidemic and a “place setting” of tools we can cultivate to tame the hamster wheel.

The Intentionality Gurus_CandacePollock_HOW DOES “ADDITIVE” BIAS KEEP YOU STUCK IN OVERWHELM11/17/22
https://www.youtube.com/c/NewClevelandRadio
Darren Hardy, author of The Compound Effect and business guru, recently spoke about our human bias to add things to our plates (tasks, possessions, commitments, apps, etc.) rather than delete them. This human tendency can grow our general sense of overwhelm with the feeling we need to be more productive and turn to more external tools to fix our challenges. Today’s podcast explores a different approach that can stop the additive bias and fix the underlying root causes of our challenges.

Taking a cue from sports, this podcast explores what “mental game” coaches have long known: that athletes’ daily protocols are the best predictors of whether they will produce winning results and how to cultivate and dominate your own Winning Protocol for your best version of yourself.

Protocols set the foundation – to better understand a protocol it is a procedure that sets forth rules of engagement.  A protocol may be a routine you use to start your day or to get back on track if you get side railed.
